Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship 2023
Annually, the Swiss Confederation awards Government Excellence Scholarships to promote international exchange and research cooperation between Switzerland and over 180 other countries. Recipients are selected by the awarding body, the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS).

Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship Summary
The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships are aimed at young researchers from abroad who have completed a master’s degree or Ph.D. and at foreign artists holding a bachelor’s degree.
Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship Worth
The scholarship amounts to a monthly payment of CHF 1’920. The scholarship amount covers the living costs of one person only.
Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship 2023-2024
The scholarship is in two categories;
Research Scholarship
This scholarship is only available to postgraduates researchers in any discipline (who hold a master’s degree as a minimum) who are planning to come to Switzerland to pursue research or further studies at the doctoral or post-doctoral level.
Research scholarships are awarded for research or study at all Swiss cantonal universities, universities of applied sciences, and the two federal institutes of technology, as well as the four research institutes. Only candidates nominated by an academic mentor at one of these higher education institutions will be considered.
Art Scholarships
These scholarships are open to art students wishing to pursue an initial master’s degree in Switzerland (arts).
Art scholarships are awarded for study at any Swiss conservatory or university of the arts.
Eligibility
To be eligible for any of the Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships, applicants must;
- Be born after 31 December 1987
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent achieved before 31 July 2023 (Art Scholarships).
- Master degree or equivalent achieved before 31 July 2023 (Research Fellowship)
- Mandatory letter from an academic host professor (Research Fellowship)
- Invalid: All applications for a second master’s degree. (Art Scholarships)
Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships Deadline
- The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships start for the academic year 2023-24: 1 September 2023 12 months (starting in September)
- Renewable up to 21 months at most depending on the Master programme chosen and the necessary ECTS credits.
- No prolongation Possible (Research Fellowship).
